Black Goose Chimney Offers Custom Chimney Cap Solutions
Chimney caps are a great protective upgrade to your existing chimney structure, whether you are actively having your chimney repaired or installing a new structure within your house.
While they are a simple item, they can prevent a series of common and costly situations from arising, such as roof fires, animal infestations, and downdrafts that will ultimately raise your heating costs and may put your home at risk.
Our team at Black Goose Chimney utilizes custom fabrication tools to ensure your chimney cap is a perfect fit.
What a Chimney Cap Really Does
Many homeowners skip chimney caps, assuming they’re just decorative additions, but, in reality, they’re essential to the safe and efficient operation of your chimney.
A chimney cap guards against a number of invaders like squirrels, chipmunks, mice, raccoons, and birds that can and will enter your home the first chance they get if your chimney is left uncapped and vulnerable.
Additionally, a chimney cap offers seasonal protection from the outside elements and prevents those elements from infiltrating your home through the chimney. For example, the right chimney cap can block rain, snow, wind, and smoke from wildfires. This is especially advantageous if you live in an area that is subject to smoke blowing in via shifting wind currents.
It can also prevent sparks from leaving your fireplace that might lead to a roof or brush fire, making this small upgrade one that could potentially save your property.
Common Signs You Need a Chimney Cap
If you are missing a chimney cap, there is a good chance you have already observed some of these more common signs. If you haven’t noticed them yet, you likely will in the near future.
Some common signs to look out for include:
- Water or moisture in the firebox
- Animal noises or nesting debris
- Drafty or smoky fireplace
- Rust stains or streaks on the chimney exterior
Problems a Chimney Cap Prevents
Most homeowners lead busy lives, which means they don’t want to have to find the time to deal with chimney issues. While issues may seem to arise out of nowhere, they do have a cause and can be prevented with the simple purchase of this important chimney upgrade.
Far more than a finishing touch, a properly installed chimney cap is a critical line of defense that protects your home from costly damage and safety hazards.
Water Damage
Two of the most common causes of rust in a chimney flue are rain and snow, both of which can be easily stopped by a chimney cap. The chimney cap prevents precipitation from entering the interior of your chimney, stopping moisture buildup in its tracks.
Without a chimney cap, your flue lining may erode, metal components will start to rust, and the actual brick and mortar in your chimney will deteriorate over time.
Animal Intrusion
Chimneys are very inviting nesting spots for pests. Not only can animals bring debris in with them that may start chimney fires, but they also bring disease, which is a health issue no one wants to deal with.
Debris and Blockages
When a chimney is left uncapped, more than just animals can drift in over time. Leaves, twigs, and other small pieces of debris that fly in the wind can easily fall into the chimney.
The buildup of these small materials can lead to a blockage or increase the risk of a chimney fire.
Downdrafts and Smoke Backflow
Anyone who has lived in a home with a chimney knows that cold air can occasionally downdraft into a room, which can be uncomfortable and unpleasant, especially if it also pushes the smoke right back into the room along with it. Chimney caps prevent downdrafts like this from happening.
Fire Safety
Chimney caps are built to stop embers from leaving your chimney and slipping onto your roof or surrounding landscape. In this way, they play a pivotal role in reducing your home’s fire risk.
When you consider the above factors, it becomes clear that a chimney cap is a quick and affordable way to protect your home while also improving the overall performance of your fireplace. If you are unsure whether or not your existing chimney has a cap, our team is happy to come out for an inspection.
Custom Chimney Caps Built to Fit Your Chimney
It can be tempting to purchase an off-the-shelf cap, but the simple truth is that they are not one-size-fits-all like the packaging suggests. Off-the-shelf chimney caps might seem convenient at the moment, but they’re rarely a true fit. Just like one-size-fits-all clothing doesn’t suit everyone, your chimney needs a custom cap to ensure maximum protection.
Our custom-fit chimney solutions at Black Goose Chimney offer the perfect fit, amazing function, and long-term durability. We offer three different bonnet styles — flat, hip, or hip & ridge — all custom fabricated to match the structure and aesthetic of your chimney.
In addition to this, our designs are available for single-flue and multi-flue configurations, crafted from stainless steel, copper, and galvanized materials.
Our Installation and Repair Process
Black Goose Chimney makes the process of upgrading your chimney simple and fail-proof.
Inspection
As our first step, we will inspect your current chimney structure to ascertain if a chimney cap is already present and/or if it’s time for replacement.
Custom Fabrication and Installation
We offer custom fabrication and weather-tight installation by mounting single-flue caps directly to the flue liner. If the flue liner is too short for this, we will adapt by using a stainless steel top-mount bracket that can be secured to the mortar crown. If your chimney requires a multi-flue cap, we will install the cap with swing-tab mounting strips.
Completion of the Job
All of our custom-fabricated chimney caps include ¾ screen mesh that acts as both a spark arrestor and critter guard to guarantee that embers stay in and animals stay out. In addition, all work is completed by Black Goose Chimney certified professionals.
