Historic Chimney Restorations

The Tidewater area has homes dating back to the 1700s, giving it plenty of historic charm. As your local chimney experts, we’re dedicated to helping you preserve the little details that make your home so special. At Black Goose Chimney, we specialize in restoring the details that make your home truly timeless.

Understanding Historic Chimney Restoration

Historic chimney restoration involves returning a chimney to its original state. At the end of the restoration process, your chimney looks and functions exactly as the builder intended. This makes chimney restoration a great way to preserve your property’s appearance.

Historic Restoration vs. Repair: What’s the Difference?

The restoration process is very different from doing a standard chimney repair. When we repair a chimney, we focus on solving a problem. For example, you may have damaged masonry or cracks in the flue liner. Additionally, the repair process uses modern materials and techniques.

Historic restoration is all about authenticity. Instead of focusing on a problem, we strive to achieve historical accuracy. Black Goose Chimney accomplishes this by sourcing period-specific materials and using traditional masonry methods. At the end of the process, your chimney maintains its original character.

Maintaining Historic Integrity

Since many homes in Tidewater neighborhoods were constructed in the 1700s and 1800s, restorations are important not only for aesthetic and architectural continuity but also for preserving cultural heritage, property value, and local historic designations. Historic chimney restoration also helps preserve the character of these communities.

Overcoming Challenges in Historic Chimney Work

Preservation is worthwhile, but it has some challenges. If you want to restore a chimney that’s more than 100 years old, it may be difficult to find the right materials. Building standards have changed over the years, so it’s tricky to match brick sizes and masonry colors.

The good news is that we blend historical fidelity with modern safety, ensuring your chimney complies with today’s codes without sacrificing authenticity. We take each challenge in stride and use our experience to overcome them.

If your home was unoccupied for many years, there’s a good chance the chimney is in disrepair. Before we tackle your restoration project, we may have to address obvious safety issues. We’ll conduct a thorough assessment to determine the best way to move forward.

Finally, you have to think about current building codes. As restoration experts, we know how to restore your chimney without violating local guidelines. We also collaborate with masons and other professionals to make your restoration project a success.

Top Reasons to Restore Your Historic Chimney

Historic restoration is a major undertaking, but there are many good reasons to do it.

  • Market appeal: Many people move to the Tidewater area because of its rich history. If you plan to sell your home at some point, restoring the chimney can help you attract buyers.
  • Cultural authenticity: Your chimney tells a story about your home. Restoring it to its original appearance helps preserve the culture of your neighborhood.
  • Enhanced safety: Restoration focuses on restoring the historic appearance of your chimney, but it also enhances safety. Addressing serious repair issues now can help prevent damage to your home in the future.
  • Long-term savings: Chimney problems don’t go away on their own. As they worsen, they also become more expensive to fix. Restoring your chimney now can help you limit repair expenses down the line.

Our Approach to Historic Restoration

Restoration focuses on restoring a chimney’s original appearance and function. As part of the process, we take the time to identify historic features and find ways to replicate them. Our restoration process starts with an understanding of your home’s architectural roots.

Architectural Authenticity

The first step is to identify the correct type of brick or mortar to use. Building materials have changed over time, so we may need hand-molded bricks or lime-based mortar to achieve the desired look. We want to replace elements with materials and techniques that mirror the original, down to the texture, shape, and color of each brick.

Compliance With Historic Standards

We also look for design elements unique to the builder or the neighborhood. In historic homes, architectural details tell a story. They look nice, but they also provide important context. Once we identify unique design elements, we find ways to preserve or replicate them. To maintain integrity, we need to comply with local preservation guidelines.

Property Value and Appeal

A buyer looking to purchase a historic home values originality. A historically accurate restoration can enhance curb appeal, protect, and even increase the home’s value.

Structural and Safety Considerations

Finally, we look for evidence of previous repairs. This helps us distinguish original features from newer ones, ensuring the restoration is precise. A chimney built before modern codes usually has a unique draft system or venting setup.

Using the wrong materials, such as modern Portland cement instead of lime mortar, can cause long-term damage to the brick and mortar, making the structure unsafe.

Black Goose Chimney’s Experience in Historic Chimney Restoration

Black Goose has more than 25 years of experience preserving historic chimneys. In that time, we’ve worked on homes of all ages and styles.

The Black Goose Chimney team even helped restore Rebecca Vaughan House, a historic property in Courtland. When we stepped onto the site, it was more than just bricks and mortar; it was a story we didn’t want people to forget.

Many similar homes collapsed, taking a piece of important history with them. The Southampton County Historical Society stepped in to save the Rebecca Vaughan House from the same fate.

Using a mix of historic and modern techniques, Black Goose Chimney established a brick foundation for the house. Our team sourced materials true to the era for authenticity. We even used limestone-based mortar to ensure the foundation looked exactly as it did in the 1800s.

Our Restoration Process

Every restoration project begins with a thorough and detailed assessment. We inspect the chimney carefully to identify important details. Our team also looks for clues to help find the right materials for the project. This may include taking samples or ordering lab tests.

Next, we salvage and preserve as much of the original materials as possible. Salvaging materials helps us keep costs low and ensures a high level of authenticity.

If necessary, we’ll source period-accurate materials to fill in the gaps. This requires careful research and planning. Finally, we use a combination of traditional building and masonry techniques to restore your chimney’s appearance.

In many cases, a restoration project also includes repairing the fireplace. If your fireplace needs a little TLC, we’ll apply our deep understanding of historic masonry to choose appropriate materials and methods.

Our Commitment to Authenticity

At Black Goose Chimney, we’re dedicated to authenticity. We understand historic building techniques and know how to source period-accurate materials. That said, we also respect current building codes.

If necessary, we’ll work with your local historical society to preserve your chimney’s charm. Collaborating with experts helps us ensure cultural and architectural authenticity.

I called for a clean and inspection. They came out and inspected and told me it didn't need cleaning. I feel like most would have "cleaned" it anyway and charged me. They only charged for the inspection which was nice of them. I will use them again in the future.

Sergey and his partner were very friendly, efficient, and knowledgable. After diagnosing the problem with my gas fireplace, they were able to complete the repair right away and demonstrated how they had fixed it. They are a busy team, so I did have to wait a few weeks for them to come out but that is the nature of gas fireplace repair. Would definately recommend them.

They came out to inspect and clean my chimney. Let me know it didn’t need sweeping however I do need to replace two fire bricks. Glad I got the inspection because it prevented a fire hazard. Very professional service and technicians. I’m hiring them to do the brick repairs. As a new homeowner it’s great to find a reliable company to annually clean my fireplace.

We set up an initial appt for 12/19 at 2:00pm with a window giving them til 4:00pm to arrive. At 4:00pm I called the office and spoke to Ari who told me they had no record of our phone number or address. Almost immediately after that call I received a voice message indicating Sergei was on his way (about 25 minutes out). I want into my email and found that there was an invoice addressed to me for $339.00 and a quote addressed to me for $8990.00. No one had ever come to our home . This was our first appt with them. Not at all impressed with the disorganization of this company.
Dexter Baird
Your technicians were very personable and knowledgeable in what they were doing. He even made an onsite repair that saved me a lot of money.

Today Black Goose came to give me a quote on my gas fireplace. Mr. Bobby asked me what I wanted to do with the fireplace because due to a lot of advice from other companies I was under the impression that I would have to tear my existing fireplace down and get a brick and mortar fireplace to burn wood. Mr. Bobby heard my desire as to what I wanted and he really gave me a simple solution now I can burn wood in my fireplace. Thanks Bobby Sims.
Mary Johnston
I was throughly disappointed with the technician. Firstly they arrived more than two hours prior to the appt time, with no phone call. I paid to have my chimney and wood stove inspected. He never even opened the wood stove and when it was brought to his attention he said it’s a metal box, it’s fine. I was also given a quote of 8k for work on the chimney. When I requested the pics that I was promised that day they had mysteriously disappeared. I spoke with the office numerous times and was told the owner would contact me. After a week of no returned calls I requested a refund which I was given. The office staff was very polite and apologetic, however the technician was rude and the owner apparently couldn’t find the time to address my concerns. I’d rather do business with a company I can trust.
Louis McAdory
Your team very quickly assessed the problem with my fireplace and explained what needed to be done to fix it. They were very professional and knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. The fireplace is now working 100%!!!! I highly recommend Black Goose Chimney for any work needed for a fireplace.
